  2.  #12-22 How readily does Joseph wait his father's orders! Those
  3.  children who are best beloved by their parents, should be the
  4.  most ready to obey them. See how deliberate Joseph's brethren
  5.  were against him. They thought to slay him from malice
  6.  aforethought, and in cold blood. Whosoever hateth his brother is
  7.  a murderer, #1Jo 3:15|. The sons of Jacob hated their brother
  8.  because their father loved him. New occasions, as his dreams and
  9.  the like, drew them on further; but this laid rankling in their
  10.  hearts, till they resolved on his death. God has all hearts in
  11.  his hands. Reuben had most reason to be jealous of Joseph, for
  12.  he was the first-born; yet he proves his best friend. God
  13.  overruled all to serve his own purpose, of making Joseph an
  14.  instrument to save much people alive. Joseph was a type of
  15.  Christ; for though he was the beloved Son of his Father, and
  16.  hated by a wicked world, yet the Father sent him out of his
  17.  bosom to visit us in great humility and love. He came from
  18.  heaven to earth to seek and save us; yet then malicious plots
  19.  were laid against him. His own not only received him not, but
  20.  crucified him. This he submitted to, as a part of his design to
  21.  redeem and save us.

  24.  #23-30 They threw Joseph into a pit, to perish there with hunger
  25.  and cold; so cruel were their tender mercies. They slighted him
  26.  when he was in distress, and were not grieved for the affliction
  27.  of Joseph, see #Am 6:6|; for when he was pining in the pit, they
  28.  sat down to eat bread. They felt no remorse of conscience for
  29.  the sin. But the wrath of man shall praise God, and the
  30.  remainder of wrath he will restrain, #Ps 76:10|. Joseph's
  31.  brethren were wonderfully restrained from murdering him, and
  32.  their selling him as wonderfully turned to God's praise.

  35.  #31-36 When Satan has taught men to commit one sin, he teaches
  36.  them to try to conceal it with another; to hide theft and
  37.  murder, with lying and false oaths: but he that covers his sin
  38.  shall not prosper long. Joseph's brethren kept their own and one
  39.  another's counsel for some time; but their villany came to light
  40.  at last, and it is here published to the world. To grieve their
  41.  father, they sent him Joseph's coat of colours; and he hastily
  42.  thought, on seeing the bloody coat, that Joseph was rent in
  43.  pieces. Let those that know the heart of a parent, suppose the
  44.  agony of poor Jacob. His sons basely pretended to comfort him,
  45.  but miserable, hypocritical comforters were they all. Had they
  46.  really desired to comfort him, they might at once have done it,
  47.  by telling the truth. The heart is strangely hardened by the
  48.  deceitfulness of sin. Jacob refused to be comforted. Great
  49.  affection to any creature prepares for so much the greater
  50.  affliction, when it is taken from us, or made bitter to us:
  51.  undue love commonly ends in undue grief. It is the wisdom of
  52.  parents not to bring up children delicately, they know not to
  53.  what hardships they may be brought before they die. From the
  54.  whole of this chapter we see with wonder the ways of Providence.
  55.  The malignant brothers seem to have gotten their ends; the
  56.  merchants, who care not what they deal in so that they gain,
  57.  have also obtained theirs; and Potiphar, having got a fine young
  58.  slave, has obtained his! But God's designs are, by these means,
  59.  in train for execution. This event shall end in Israel's going
  60.  down to Egypt; that ends in their deliverance by Moses; that in
  61.  setting up the true religion in the world; and that in the
  62.  spread of it among all nations by the gospel. Thus the wrath of
  63.  man shall praise the Lord, and the remainder thereof will he
  64.  restrain.

  66.  * The profligate conduct of Judah and his family.
  67.  
  68.  - This chapter gives an account of Judah and his family, and
  69.  such an account it is, that it seems a wonder that of all
  70.  Jacob's sons, our Lord should spring out of Judah, #Heb 7:14|.
  71.  But God will show that his choice is of grace and not of merit,
  72.  and that Christ came into the world to save sinners, even the
  73.  chief. Also, that the worthiness of Christ is of himself, and
  74.  not from his ancestors. How little reason had the Jews, who were
  75.  so called from this Judah, to boast as they did, #Joh 8:41|.
  76.  What awful examples the Lord proclaims in his punishments, of
  77.  his utter displeasure at sin! Let us seek grace from God to
  78.  avoid every appearance of sin. And let that state of humbleness
  79.  to which Jesus submitted, when he came to put away sin by the
  80.  sacrifice of himself, in appointing such characters as those
  81.  here recorded, to be his ancestors, endear the Redeemer to our
  82.  hearts.
